The Istrian Cellar ("Istrska klet") restaurant is a family restaurant. The care for it goes from generation to generation. The restaurant has during years of work and through respectful tradition gained several commendations.
The beginnings of the "Istrian Cellar" go back to the years 1970/72. The restaurant has changed its name several times during this thirty year period. From 1972 through 1986 it was named after the Pomjan village. 1987 the name was changed to "Pod topoli" ("Under the Two Poplar Trees"). Even today this name would fit – two mighty poplar trees embrace the restaurant yard, the dance-floor and the stage.
The last time the restaurant changed its name was 1995. Since then it is named "Istrska klet" ("Istrian Cellar"), not without reason. In case you want to find out the reason for the last change of name, visiting us would be the best way to do so. The restaurant "Pomjan" was founded in the years 1970/72 by Milka and Slavko (Miroslav) Tomšič, the parents of the present owner. They led the restaurant in an exemplary way for more than ten years and then trusted it into the hands of their son Mirko Tomšič.
The son Mirko, who was until then working for his living as first engineer officer and manager on a ship of the merchant navy, took the entrusted task very seriously and together with his wife Smiljana took care of the restaurant.
They recognized that the entire area around Pomjan is endangered and becoming extinct. Like the area itself, the old istrian customs were dying out as well. Exactly this became a challenge for the Tomšič couple.
