Pomjan is a picturesque istrian village in the middle of Slovene Istria.
The village has supposedly gotten its name from apple plantations (pomi),
who are said to have once covered the surrounding area of the present-day
village.
The village Pomjan is interesting for several reasons. If we tell you that
Pomjan is geographically the highest village in the Šavrinska area you
will rightfully expect a beautiful view on the entire Slovene Istria. The
most beautiful outlook is certainly after rain. On such occasions one can
admire the entire Bay of Trieste and above it Triglav (highest mountain
in Slovenia) with the Julian Alps and the Dolomites.
In the village itself is the old village church worth a visit. Its oldest
part is said to have been built in the 12. century, the new part in the
15. century. The church boasts as well with old frescos and inscriptions,
the oldest one dating to 1439. In the little church is a permanently open
exhibition of the history of Pomjan. The Tourist and Culture Club Pomjan
takes care of the village sight-seeings. In the close vicinity of the village
– on the Pomjan Hill or Romana – are the remains of an ancient fort offering
a great view from a 405 meters |
|
elevation above the sea.
Yet Pomjan isn't interesting only as a historical place – it is a junction
of different paths leading to it or crossing it.
And so is Pomjan a popular pleasure trip site for bikers, mountaineers,
joggers, hikers...
Through it are leading:
- the European Transversal E6
- a bicycle path
- the Slovenian Mountaineer Path
- a horse path
- the Tourist Wine Road
- various hiking paths leading to the nearby coast
Every of the mentioned paths has its curiosities and distinctiveness which
are variegating your visit. So come and visit us!
